  1. 1.The study of the nature, structure, and character of deliberate change for the better.
  2. 2.The discipline of replacing the default human operating system with a conscious, repeatable architecture.

Upgrade Paradigm

The Upgrade Paradigm

Every human action, from the smallest choice to the largest, is an attempt to improve something: a moment, a relationship, a career, a life. The Upgrade Paradigm treats that motive as the mind's operating system. Once you see your brain as an upgrade calculator, the only question left is how well it is programmed, and by whom.

Upgrade Paradigm First Principles

  1. 01The motive behind all human action may be understood as the desire to improve (aka upgrade) one's life or the lives of others.
  2. 02So, your brain is an "upgrade calculator."
  3. 03Thus, your "upgrade calculator's algorithm" is of prime importance.
  4. 04Your Brain is programmable.
  5. 05Therefore, there is no better way to spend your time than improving your improvement engine.

Why does 'Better' feel so bad?

Downgrade Science is Everywhere.

We live in a culture obsessed with "better." Better jobs, better partners, better bodies, better lives. We are told to maximize, to optimize, to never settle. But look at the data. The obsession with "better" is actually creating "worse."

We call this Downgrade Science (or clinically, "Better-itis"). It is the default operating system of the modern world, and the problem with it is backed by hard data:

Research from Swarthmore College proves that people who seek "the best" (Maximizers) are clinically less happy, less optimistic, and more depressed than those who accept "good enough" (Satisfiers).

Economic data shows that 40% of people are chasing the top 1% of outcomes (in dating, wealth, and status), creating a mathematical impossibility that leaves millions alone and broke (emotionally, financially, and/or positionally).

Studies in the Journal of Consumer Research show that as options increase, our ability to choose decreases. We don't upgrade; we freeze.

Surveys indicate 40% of women pursue men in the top 2% (6 feet tall, earning $150,000+, not obese), contributing to declining marriage rates (Cornell University, Journal of Marriage and Family).

The Verdict

The more you obsess over an upgrade fantasy, the more you degrade your attention to reality and realistically possible upgrades. You are suffering from the Stockholm Syndrome of Idolatry—defending the very fantasies that are holding you hostage.

Nobody is studying the alternative to Downgrade Science.

Until now.

Upgrade Engine

Your Brain is an Upgrade Engine.

Every decision is a choice between the options you can see. What you see is set by what you desire and fear, and those flow from who you perceive yourself to be. The seven first principles below trace that chain.

Decisions per day0The average adult, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Upgrade Science First Principles

  1. 01We don't define our identity, we perceive it.
  2. 02The master(s) we choose and serve define our baseline.
  3. 03Our desires and fears flow from our perception of our identity.
  4. 04Options are what you "see."
  5. 05We only see things we desire or fear.
  6. 06Decisions (30,000+ daily) are between "options."
  7. 07We can't decide against our greatest desires.

Natural Process

The Natural Universal Upgrade Process

Relationship Upgrades. Career Upgrades. Business Upgrades. Anything Else.

This is what we mean by it's the "UNIVERSAL Upgrade Process". Get it in your veins, improve how you improve anything. Right now you have 50 processes or none. Now, you can just have one.

Where are you? Who are you? This is your starting place — what or where you "Upgrade from."

What do you want? What drives you? This is what or where you "Upgrade to."

What do you "see"? How are you going to get what you desire? This is "How you might get there."

Opt for the status quo? What will you trade-off? This is how you will (or won't) get there.

Finally, it's time for Nike — just do it.

Upgrade Elements

Elements of Upgrade Reality

There are 16 elements of human transformation. Not 47. And not a list of tips. Sixteen elements. Every upgrade you've ever made — and every one you've failed to make — can be traced back to how well you understood and applied these elements. Every upgrade — in any domain — is made of these elements. Every upgrade — from economy to first class, from stuck to free, from struggling to thriving — is built from the same elements. Learn them, and you learn the architecture of change for the better.

About Matthew J. Bennett

Chief Student of Upgrade Science, First Universal Upgrade Scientist

  • 1991I began to learn the upgrade process while flying to spring training as a minor-league pitcher with the Kansas City Royals in 1991.
  • 1996I founded First Class Flyer in 1996, the longest running publication in the air travel industry, with 7,000,000+ upgrades served.
  • 2001I was nicknamed "Mr. Upgrade" in 2001.
  • 2024After 27 years of reverse-engineering how 100,000+ travelers upgrade, I realized I wasn't studying travel — I was studying how the human brain makes every decision it's ever made. So, I discovered and formulated The Universal Upgrade Process in 2024.
  • 2026I launched The Upgrade Formula in 2026.
